For the past four Sundays in worship we have been encountering the wisdom of the Letter to the Hebrews. It has been a journey through our corporate faith history: a history that spans back to the beginning of God’s creation, from Abraham and his posterity, Moses, the prophets, through Jesus—the pioneer and perfecter of the faith, our high priest, king, and the only intermediary we need.
The letter is thought to be the preaching of a second-generation Christian (possibly in Italy), who sees the shaky faith of his community, and seeks to give them words of warning and encouragement. The final words of this letter that we encounter have to do with hospitality. The words are a not-so-veiled reference to the story of Abraham and Sarah receiving the company of God’s angels in Genesis 18.
I love that this passage is spoken in our ears on Sunday, September 1. Just when the church is gearing up to enter a new season of learning and worship, we collectively are invited to think not only about ourselves and our personal faith, but to welcome others into this legacy of grace — where Christ has built for us an unshakeable kingdom.
So how can we accomplish this welcome at Calvary? I’m sure there are a thousand answers to that question, but a few occur to me that fit right in with the priorities we have established in our long-range plan.
- Let your light shine: On September 8 we have the opportunity to serve the community at Appian Way in our Day of Service. This event allows us show Christ’s love to strangers who need the kindness of God as much as each of us does.
- Whatever you do for the least of these: The Thursday Night Community Supper at Calvary has served Federal Way for almost 20 years. During that time many of our members and church neighbors have faithfully served at the meal tirelessly, but now they are getting tired. Will you please consider how you might contribute to our continued reputation for serving the least? Contact Jan Olson or Heather Parker for more information.
- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly: In late September we will begin a Wednesday night Bible survey entitled “Bible Blitz.” Not only could you grow in your understanding of God’s Word, but you could bring a friend—and so practice hospitality (and, perhaps, even entertain angels). This class will happen at the same time as Confirmation class, which means that parents can attend Bible study while their kids are in class.
- Worship the Lord with gladness: As we come together in worship we testify to Christ’s grace in our midst. Each of us who is present in worship each Sunday witnesses to the power of community and our corporate desire to hear God’s
promises and be empowered by God’s Spirit. - Entertain angels: When you see someone new at church greet him. Tell him your name, and say, “I don’t know if I have met you before?” If you’ve seen the person before but don’t remember her name say, “Will you please remind me of your name?” By simply approaching the person you let her know that her presence is noticed and appreciated. Also, support the Hospitality Team however you’re able—providing treats, support, or funds.
In Christ,
Lori A. Cornell
